Siemens Contract May Lead to More Sacramento Jobs

One of Sacramento's largest manufacturers is getting a boost from out of state.

Siemens has been awarded a $225 million contract to build 32 diesel-electric locomotives for five transportation departments in California, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri and Washington.

The part for the "Charger" locomotives will be built at Siemens plants around the nation. Those will then be sent here where they will be assembled at the plant in Sacramento.

The first shipment will be delivered in 2016. If all goes well, the project could expand to an additional 225 locomotives.

Siemens employs about 800 workers in the Sacramento area. That may be expanded with this new contract.
