Senate Passes Emergency Drought Relief Act

Senate Passes Emergency Drought Relief Act

Using a quick procedure shortly before adjourning for the Memorial Day Weekend, the Senate passed the Emergency Drought-Relief Act for California aimed a solving the state's water storage, river protection, and irrigation delivery problems.

The legislation now sets up some serious deal-making between the House and the Senate that could pit one Central Valley region against another.

The Republican-controlled house passed their version of a California water bill in February.

In a joint statement Thursday evening, house leadership called the senate bill a "starting point"  but insist "it fails to address the state's long term needs."

The house version limits redirecting of water and expands reservoirs.

The senate bill uses transfers and exchanges around the delta to ensure water deliveries.
