New Art Gallery Comes to Davis

For years, lack of a proper gallery has meant the UC Davis Art Collection has gone mainly unnoticed, but that all changed Friday as the University broke ground on the brand new $30 million Shrem Art Gallery.

The collection includes nearly 5,000 items, and the space designed by New York based "SO-IL" architecture will allow the public to see some of the collected works for the first time. Sixty-five percent of the collection features prints from the 19th century.

A gift of $10 million in 2011 by Napa Valley vintner Jan Shrem became a crucial part of the University's plan to open the museum at UC Davis.
