Mercury 7 Astronaut Scott Carpenter Dies

One of the original Mercury 7 astronauts has died.

Scott Carpenter flew the second American manned orbital flight back in May of 1962.  Aboard his Aurora 7 spacecraft, Carpenter flew three times around the earth before splashing down off the Florida coast.

In addition to his days as a pioneering astronaut, Carpenter was also an aquanaut who did long-duration missions in SEALAB in the 1960s.

Carpenter was also an author, penning two novels called underwater techno-thrillers. Carpenter suffered a recent stroke and died in Colorado. He was 88.
