Lawmakers Continue to Push for Tighter Insurance Regulations for Ride Share Companies

Emotional testimony at the State Capitol today, in an ongoing fight between insurers and ride share companies.

"His face was lit up by the light of his phone, that was the last thing I remember before my daughter was killed." 

That is the mother of 6-year-old Sofia Lui, who was hit by an Uber driver in San Francisco.

She and her husband are currently suing the company and backing a bill by Democratic Assemblywoman Susan Bonilla that would expand when drivers should be covered by commercial insurance.

"And that is once the app is turned on until the app is turned off," Bonilla said. 

There have been ongoing negotiations over the finer points.

Uber supports the "on and off" approach but argues less coverage is needed when a driver is waiting, but hasn't been matched with a passenger.
