Californians Want to Pay Down Debt with Budget Surplus

California voters would rather use projected surpluses to pay down state debt and build up reserves than restore some funding for social service programs.

That's among the findings in a new survey from the Public Policy Institute of California.

"Half of Californians say the state budget situation is a big problem. They are remembering in the not too distant past that we had severe budget problems in our state," PPIC President Mark Baldassare said.

The survey found 39 percent of likely voters want to restore programs, while 57-percent want to save the money and put it toward long-term costs.
