California Assemblyman Pushes for CPS Reform

A push to reform Child Protective Services is gaining momentum across some very public settings.

There's already a large state audit under way, but Assemblyman Tim Donnelly has been hosting a series of town hall meetings to gather some very personal experiences that people have with CPS.

He says he's finding cases where social workers have been inattentive -- but also plenty where they've been far too aggressive in removing children.

That has him considering a package of bills.

"Most of them revolve around requiring some level of criminality to be proved before children are removed from the home," Donnelly said.

Donnelly tells News10 his town halls were prompted in part by the case of Sammy Nickolayev, who was taken from his family after a dispute over medical care.
