Audit Blasts Veterans Home for Mismanagement of Funds

A state auditor's report finds gross mismanagement on behalf of a Department of Veterans Affairs administrator that has resulted in the wasting of hundreds of thousands of dollars of state money.

The report finds an administator of a veterans home in Yountville spent nearly a half-million dollars to construct an adventure park, a cafe and tavern on the site of the state property without following proceedures or regulations.

"It is clear that poor decisions were made, and the department has taken action to strengthen the internal control of the Morale Welfare and Recreation Fund," J.P. Tremblay Deputy Secretary for Veterans Affairs said.

The investigation into the misuse of funds came about after an anonymous whisleblower reported the violations of state guidelines.
