City Officials Will Decide to Keep or Toss Ban on Big Box Stores

SACRAMENTO -- Tonight's the night Sacramento's elected officials decide whether to toss out their ban on big box stores.

The idea was to save local small businesses and not see the big stores overrun Midtown Sacramento.

The result, the big boxes went in to surrounding communities and with it millions of dollars in sales tax revenues.

Now the city is considering streamlining its regulatory process in the hopes of attracting some big retailers into the area.

The Sacramento Bee reports big box retailers made more than $7 million in charitable contributions to groups supported by the Mayor and City Council. And opponents say welcoming big boxes into the city is just a glad hand from City Hall.
