California Teens Smoking Less than the National Average

There's good and bad news on the teen smoking front. The numbers are down nationally but still a problem here in California.

About 18 percent of San Diego County teens smoke. That's the highest rate of any county in California. Statewide 14 percent of California teens smoke, that's lower than the just released numbers nationwide, but not as low as other western states such as Utah or Washington.

The study was compiled by the Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics. According to those statistics, only 5 percent of high school sophomores smoke daily. That's compared with 18 percent in the 1990s.

Besides being less likely to smoke, U.S. kids are less likely to be exposed to secondhand smoke, as well.
