SACRAMENTO -- The state's Department of Public Health is urging Californians to get a flu vaccine this year.
Doctor James Watt says there's no indication that there will be a major outbreak this year, but the flu tends to be unpredictable.
"It's really impossible to say how serious this flu season will be," Watt said.
Nonetheless, the Communicable Disease Control's chief says taking a little time to get that shot now could save you a LOT of trouble later.
"Thousands of people get sick, many people go to the hospital, people are out of work -- out of school, people just feel bad. And the flu vaccine is the best protection against all of that," Watt said.

Many types of flu vaccinations are offered, including the traditional nasal spray. There's also the option of a high-dose flu vaccine for those 65 and over.
