Officials: Young People Are Signing Up for Covered California

The state's health insurance exchange continues to gain momentum. More than 70,000 people signed up just last week.

At Covered California's monthly meeting Thursday, executive director Peter Lee told the board that the state's health insurance exchange continues to see significant growth.

"We are having over 10,000 Californians a day being determined eligible for coverage that's going to take effect Jan. 1," Lee said.

But even more imprortantly:

"Young people, 18- to 34-year-olds are enrolling for coverage at the same rate that they are in the population. That's very good news," Lee said.

That's because young people tend to have fewer health care needs -- their premiums help cover the cost of insuring the elderly. More than 100,000 people have signed up for coverage through the website since it went online Oct. 1.
