Whooping Cough on the Rise in Sacramento County

The Sacramento County Health Department says we have an outbreak of whooping cough.

Sixty-nine cases have been confirmed so far this year, compared to 59 in all of 2013.

Those 69 affected include three adults over the age of 18 and 11 infants under a year old.

Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, begins with symptoms similar to a common cold, which then develop into a cough with a loud gasp in some patients.

Shortness of breath, nausea and discoloration of the face are also common.

Sufferers should see a doctor as soon as possible and a Pertussis vaccine is available and recommended. The disease can be fatal.
