Safe Kids California Reminds You to Keep Medicines, Toxins out of Reach of Kids

It's National Poison Prevention Week and a statewide non-profit is pushing to get the word out.

Safe Kids California reminds you to keep medicines and toxic materials locked away, and out of the sight of children.

"Store it up and out of their reach. Even makeup, things that you don't consider toxic, it's toxic to children," Director Katie Smith said.

Smith says half of all poison-related deaths among those 5 and younger involve medicine.

"Children do have faster metabolisms, they're smaller, so an adult dose is really not a good thing," she said.

It's also important to never call medication "candy" or tell children it tastes like candy and to have the national poison-control number handy.

If you have questions or concerns you can reach poison control at 1-800-222-1222.
