Measles Cases Up Throughout California

Measles Cases Up Throughout California

In addition to a tough flu season, state health officials say measles cases are on the rise in California.

The state Department of Public Health says most of the 32 confirmed cases this year are in Southern California -- 25 -- while Northern California has only been hit with seven.

Dr. Gil Chavez with the health department says although there has been a rise in cases this year, the number of measles cases has been very low over the years dating back to when a vaccine was introduced in the 1960s.

Still, this time last year, just three measles cases had been reported.

The CDPH says several of the cases involved people who had traveled to the Philippines and India where the disease is widespread.
